Advanced Pre-Writing: Five Tricky Trace Lanes

This is the hardest page in the pre-writing series, and it looks the part: five trace lanes instead of four, filled with the trickiest strokes of all — battlement lines with their square ups and downs, tightening spirals, lying eights, sharp mountain peaks and chains of loops. Each lane begins at an orange start dot with an arrow, and at the end of every one a toy from the toy-themed artwork waits as the prize. The child works lane by lane down the page.

Mixing strokes is a real cognitive step up from repeating them. On earlier pages the hand settles into one rhythm per sheet; here the child must read each new lane, recognize what kind of movement it asks for, and switch — from square stops to round swings to crossing eights — five times in a row. That read-then-adjust habit is exactly what writing across a line of different letters demands. Five lanes also stretch stamina: finishing the whole page without the line wandering is an achievement worth naming.
