Pre-Writing Worksheet
Tracing Zigzag and Straight Lines: Sharp Corners Ahead
This pre-writing worksheet is the angular one: every stroke on it turns with a snap. Four trace lanes cross the page — a straight line, a zigzag, a row of mountain peaks, and a battlement path that climbs, runs flat along the top, and drops down again like the wall of a castle. The child puts their pencil on the orange start dot, follows the arrow, and steers around every corner until they reach the little animal waiting at the end of each lane.
Corners teach something curves never can: stopping. To turn a sharp angle, the pencil must halt completely, pivot, and set off in a new direction — the same stop-and-go control that later makes a crisp E, a pointed M, and a 7 with a real corner instead of a droop. Children who race learn fast that a zigzag drawn at speed loses its points, so this page quietly rewards a slower, more deliberate hand. It is worth watching for the classic error, rounding the corners; a gentle reminder to stop at the point, then turn, fixes it.
The page prints free as a PDF, so corners can be practiced as often as they need. Wavy lines and curves is its natural partner sheet — the soft, flowing opposite of these angles — and once both feel easy, the mixed advanced pencil paths page brings sharp and round strokes together on one sheet.
