Tracing Wavy Lines: Waves, Bumps, Cups and Loops

Nothing on this pre-writing worksheet has a corner. Its four trace lanes are all soft movement: a rolling wave, a row of rainbow bumps, a line of open cups, and a chain of round loops. The child starts each lane at the orange dot, follows the arrow, and lets the pencil rise and fall all the way across the page to the piece of fruit waiting at the finish — an apple here, a pear there — one smooth line per lane.

Curved strokes are where handwriting gets its flow. Bumps and cups are the raw material of m, n, u and h; the wave rehearses the gentle joins between letters; and loops are a first taste of the movement cursive will one day ask for. What matters most here is rhythm: the goal is not a perfect copy but an even, relaxed rise and fall, with the wrist and fingers doing the steering rather than the whole arm. A child who hums while tracing these lanes is doing it exactly right.
