Number Bonds: Find the Missing Whole

This Kindergarten number bonds worksheet turns the usual task around. On all six bonds the two parts are printed and the big circle at the top — the whole — is the dashed, empty one. The child reads the two parts, puts them together, and writes the total into the whole. The answers run from 6 to 10, so the numbers stay friendly while the direction of the thinking quietly flips.

Reversing the blank changes the operation without changing the picture. Finding a missing part is subtraction wearing a friendly diagram; finding the missing whole is plain addition — and children who have only ever seen one of the two often assume that every bond means take away. Working both directions on the same shape is what makes the part-whole relationship flexible rather than a memorized procedure, and it is the same insight that fact families formalize a year later. Expect a few children to subtract out of habit on the first card. One question usually settles it for good: are we putting these together, or breaking something apart?
