Make Ten: Number Bonds with Counting Dots

Four large number bonds fill this Kindergarten page, and every one of them makes ten. Beneath the numeral in the whole circle runs a row of ten counting dots; one part is printed and the other waits as a dashed circle. Because there are only four bonds and each is drawn big, the page is unhurried — the child counts the dots, reads the part that is given, and writes the partner that completes ten.

Four large cards instead of a dense grid is a classroom decision as much as a design one. A page like this works on a table between two children, under a document camera, or in a small pull-out group where every dot has to be visible from across the table — and the dots give the group something concrete to point at while they argue their way to an answer. The pairs that make ten deserve that much attention, because they are the facts behind bridging strategies, mental addition, and eventually every column method the child will ever meet.

Print the PDF free and keep a copy for the group table. Children who need a smaller whole first can start with number bonds to 5, where the dots do the same job at half the size, and once ten is secure, number bonds to 20 is the natural step up.
