Number Bonds Within 10: A Different Whole Every Time

The six bonds on this Kindergarten page do not share a whole. One card asks about 7, the next about 9, the next about 5 — any whole from 5 to 10 can turn up, and there are no counting dots to lean on this time. Each bond prints the whole and one of its parts, and the child writes the missing part into the dashed circle. Six bonds, six fresh starts, no two the same.

Mixing the wholes is a deliberately awkward choice, and that is exactly where its value lies. On a single-whole page a child can answer the second card without really reading it, because the number at the top never changes; here the first thing to check is which whole this particular bond is about. Teachers spot the tell immediately — a child who writes a partner for 10 on a card whose whole is 8 has been running on autopilot rather than reading. A mixed page catches that habit early, while it is still cheap to fix, and it pushes the child toward genuinely holding several different decompositions at once instead of one rehearsed set.
