Number Maze 1 to 20: Count Along with the Little Train

Kindergarten Counting & Cardinality Common Core

A little train stands at the green start circle in a green valley, with pine trees, a deer and a rabbit beside the tracks and a wooden cabin at the far end of the line. The tracks branch again and again, and round stones sit along them, each with a number. The right line passes the numbers 1 to 20 in order. The other stones are traps: numbers that skip ahead, numbers that go back, and numbers that repeat.

At every fork the child counts on and picks the stone with the next number. That makes counting to 20 more than a chant: it asks a child to know which number comes next from any point, and to read two-digit numbers carefully. The teen numbers are where kindergarten children most often slip, so the forks between 10 and 20 are where to slow down and say each number aloud. Counting aloud while drawing helps.

The page prints as a PDF, works as a screen version where the child drags the train from stone to stone and presses Check, and comes with an answer key showing the 1 to 20 line in colour. In the same family, the skip-counting maze counts by 5s all the way to 100, and the alphabet mazes use letters instead of numbers. These are picture mazes with a story; square-grid mazes, dot-to-dot and word sorting have their own pages.
