Parts of the Body: Which Come in Twos?

Eight picture-and-word cards fill the right two thirds of this kindergarten page, arranged two to a row, with the family's line-drawn figure standing beside them. Each card shows one body part and its name in the singular: foot, nose, eye, mouth, knee, elbow, hand and head. The instruction asks one question of all eight at once. Five of them are parts a child has two of and three are parts they have only one of, and nothing on the card says which.

Sorting by a property rather than by name is the step up from the counting sheet, and eight cards with a five-to-three split is enough to stop a child circling everything or every other one. The three singles are all on the face or the head, so the rule a child arrives at is usually about sides, and the elbow and knee cards test it, since a joint is easy to forget when you are thinking about hands and feet.

One sheet, eight cards, five to circle. The words are printed in the singular under every picture, so a child who reads foot and circles it is being asked about their own body, not about the card. This is the classifying face of the body family and the natural follow-on from the how-many page, where the same pairs were counted one card at a time.
