Read the Logic Grid: True or False

Grade 2 Logical reasoning (readiness) PDF only Aligned standard — coming soon

Nothing on this grade-2 page has to be solved. Both grids come already filled in with ticks and crosses, three children and three zoo animals each, and the work is on the left: five numbered sentences per grid, each followed by a circled tick and a circled cross. On this print the first grid gives Tom the tiger, Ben the monkey and Mia the zebra, and the sentences read Ben does not have the zebra, Mia has the tiger, The child with the monkey is Ben, and so on, with the animal drawn in place of its name. The child reads the grid, decides whether each sentence is true, and circles the tick or the cross.

Reading a finished grid is a different skill from filling one, and it is the skill that catches the child who fills grids by pattern without knowing what a tick means. A row with one tick and two crosses is a sentence in disguise, Tom has the tiger, and this page asks the child to translate it in both directions, including the negative form and the form that starts with the animal. Two or three of the five sentences are true on each grid, never all or none, so guessing does not work. The teacher looks at the does not have sentences, where a true statement is about a cross.

A one-sheet color print with no marks to make on the grids themselves. Use it before the base page with a child who is new to grids, or after it as the check that the marks were understood. The three clues, one answer page is the solving version, and the yes, no and either-or page adds clue kinds. Sentences to judge against a picture are the read and do family; here they are judged against a grid.
