Rounding to the Nearest 10 and 100

Grade 3 Number & Operations in Base Ten PDF only Common Core

Eight three-digit numbers run down this 3rd grade page, each with two dashed boxes beside it under a pair of headings: nearest ten and nearest hundred. The sheet shown asks for 159, 494, 791, 305, 353, 535, 567 and 556. The reference band works the same number, 472, twice over — once to 470 with the ones digit marked and once to 500 with the tens digit marked — so the two answers of one number are shown side by side before any are asked for.

Every other rounding face names one place and keeps it. This one puts both on the same line, which is the only way to show that rounding has no single answer until the place is fixed: 494 is 490 and it is also 500, and neither is wrong. The digit that decides moves for each box, so a child must relocate it eight times over rather than settle into one habit — the ones digit for the first box, the tens digit for the second.

One sheet, eight numbers, sixteen boxes. Go back to the original number for the second box rather than rounding the first answer again; on this sheet the two routes agree, but they do not always, and the habit is worth forming here. Print it last in the rounding family, after the separate nearest-ten and nearest-hundred pages it puts together.
