Syllable Division with Animals: Draw a Scoop Under Every Syllable

Grade 1 Phonological Awareness PDF only Common Core

The whole word is printed on this 1st grade syllable division worksheet with animals — the child shows where it breaks. Six numbered cards, two across and three down, each hold a large color picture with its word spelled out in spaced letters below and a thin line under the word; on this sheet the words are woodpecker, elephant, vulture, donkey, reindeer and seagull. The child says the word, claps its parts, and draws one scoop — a small curved arc — under each syllable along that line. Words of two and three syllables are mixed, with at least two three-syllable words on every sheet at this level, and up to eleven letters.

Drawing the scoops is the syllable task in its purest form: nothing is counted into a box and no syllable is written, so the only thing the child produces is the division itself, and a teacher can see at a glance whether woodpecker got three arcs or two. Multisyllable animal names give the practice a reason, because these are the words a first grader meets in a nonfiction book and stalls on. The letters are spaced so that an arc can be drawn cleanly under each part.

It prints on one sheet and needs a pencil. The write-the-word-in-syllables page has the child copy the word with dashes instead of drawing arcs, and the two-or-three page sorts a word bank by syllable count.
