Trace and Count: How Many Ducks Are on the Pond?

Kindergarten Counting & Cardinality PDF only Common Core

A big oval pond fills the lower part of the page, and five ducks swim on it, some facing left and some facing right. The ducks are drawn in dashes. On the bank above the water there is a tree, a frog and a turtle, all drawn in solid lines, with a cloud in the sky and reeds at the water's edge. In the top corner an empty box with a writing line waits for the answer. Only the ducks are dashed, so the page itself shows which animals to trace and count.

Tracing each duck before counting it slows the child down and turns every duck into one clear thing to count. Because the ducks are scattered around the pond rather than standing in a line, the child has to keep track of which ones have already been counted, which is the real counting skill for kindergarten: count up to ten objects in a scattered arrangement and answer how many. The frog and the turtle are there on purpose. They are a different kind of animal and are not dashed, so the child learns to count only what the question asks about.

This printable PDF suits kindergarten math and fine-motor time at once, and it works well with a small group: trace, count together, then write the number. The answer is five, and the number is written by the child, so there is no key to check. For more figure-and-ground looking, try the forest page with five hidden animals. Picture tracing follows the outline of whole pictures; abstract line practice, step-by-step drawing and numbered dot-to-dot have their own pages.
