Mama's Roll Call — Count Out That Many (0 to 9)

About this activity

Mama Duck calls the morning roll at Quack Creek, asking for an exact number of ducklings — send six, send eight, or none at all on a sleepy morning — and the child counts them out one by one from the raft, then signs the roll by tracing that number in the mud. It's a free, interactive Kindergarten counting activity that plays in the browser, with no sign-up.

The big idea is counting to answer 'how many,' the focus of K.CC.B.5. The rounds vary the challenge so counting cannot become a habit of grabbing: ducklings may be lined up tidily or scattered, mixed colors mean counting only the yellow ones, some rounds arrive in small groups to add up to a running total, and one round asks for zero. Pairing the count with writing the numeral ties the number word to its written symbol.

It is aligned to Common Core K.CC.B.5 — counting to answer 'how many?' for objects in a line, an array, a scattered arrangement, or up to a given number. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.
