Beginning Sounds Worksheet

Beginning Sounds with Camping Gear — Letter K

Kindergarten Reading: Foundational Skills Common Core

Begin with kettle and listen to its first sound. This sheet asks the child to find every one of the camping gear that starts the same way as K — kettle and kayak — and mark them. The point is the sound at the front of each word and the letter K it belongs to, the Kindergarten letter-sound link, set in a scene mixing a tent, a torch and a backpack so the child sifts many opening sounds to find K's.

The Kindergarten skill here is letter-sound correspondence: knowing the sound K makes and recognizing it at the start of a spoken word. Finding kettle and kayak trains it without any reading — the child works from the pictures and says each word aloud. Tying the sound at the front of kettle to the letter K, again and again, builds the habit that blending and decoding will later rely on.

Listening for K across a scene of camping gear turns phonics into a game, and finishing one letter invites the next. Try the B-sound pictures in camping gear, or the C-sound pictures in camping gear.
