Beginning Sounds Worksheet
Beginning Sounds with Forest Creatures — Letter B
This Kindergarten sheet is all about the sound B makes at the start of a word. The child hunts the forest creatures, says each one, and marks beaver, butterfly and bat — the names that open with B. Stretching beaver to hear its first sound and tying it to the letter B is how children learn the sound-letter links that reading will lean on, and a scene of a fox, a deer and a hedgehog supplies plenty to sort.
Listening for a word's first sound and matching it to a letter is foundational phonics — the link a child needs before sounding words out. Hunting the forest creatures for B rehearses it concretely: say each picture, hear the start, match the letter. With beaver, butterfly and bat hiding among a fox, a deer and a hedgehog, the child compares many opening sounds in one sitting, and the connection between the B sound and its letter grows a little more automatic each time.
Once a child can pick the B sound out of a word like beaver, that same careful listening works everywhere. When this sheet feels easy, move on to the A-sound pictures in forest creatures, or the C-sound pictures in forest creatures. Every beginning-sounds worksheet and the full forest creatures set are free to print or play online for kindergarten, and each first sound a child names makes the next letter that little bit quicker to catch.
