About this activity
A picture appears — cat, dog, pig, sun, bus, hat, fox, bun, and more — and the child taps the correct letters to build the consonant-vowel-consonant word that names it, choosing from the right letters mixed with a few distractors. Build the CVC Word is a free Kindergarten phonics activity that runs in the browser with no account needed.
Spelling a word, rather than just reading one, makes a child slow down and account for every sound. To build 'cat' a child has to hear and choose c, then a, then t, and the distractor letters are close enough that a careless tap leads somewhere else — so each of the three sounds has to be matched to a letter on purpose. Working through twenty familiar words turns letter-sound knowledge into the act of producing a word from its sounds.
It is aligned to Common Core RF.K.3 — applying phonics and word-analysis skills to decode common CVC words. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.
