Fact Families to 10: Four Houses, Small Numbers

Four fact family houses stand on this Grade 1 page. Three numbers sit on each triangular roof — a trio such as 3, 4 and 7 — and underneath them the four facts that trio makes are already printed: two additions and two subtractions, each ending in an empty box. The child reads the roof and completes all four, filling sixteen boxes across the page. Every number stays within 10, and no house uses a double.

Keeping the numbers small on a first fact family page is deliberate. The idea being taught here is structural — the same three numbers rearrange into four different sentences — and that idea is hard to notice if the child is busy working out whether 8 and 9 make 17. With every sum inside ten the arithmetic is nearly free, so the child's attention lands on the pattern instead: one trio, two orders for the addition, two starting points for the subtraction. Once a child has genuinely seen it, that pattern transfers to any numbers at all.
