Fill in the Blank Worksheet
Fill in the Blank: Choose the Word
Six rows fill this 1st grade page. Each has a picture, a sentence with a dashed box in it, and two word chips printed underneath. The sheet shown offers duck or penguin, fox or rabbit, ball or kite, giraffe or zebra, elephant or rhinoceros, and bat or bee. The child circles the chip that fits and then copies that word into the box, so every row is answered twice — once by choosing and once by writing.
A pair of options is a narrower scaffold than a seven-word bank and a wider one than empty boxes, which is why this face sits between them. The wrong chip is never random: it is always a word that would make a grammatical sentence, so the picture and the meaning of the sentence are the only things that separate the two. Bat and bee is the sharpest pair, three letters against three, differing by one sound.
One sheet, six sentences, twelve chips. Copying after circling is worth insisting on, because it is where the spelling is learned; a child who only circles has read but not written. Use it with a child who finds the open bank page too crowded, or as a bridge into the letter-box face, where neither the word nor a rival is offered.
