Fill in the Blank Worksheet
Fill in the Blank Sentences
Seven picture-and-sentence rows make up this 1st grade page. Each begins with a small picture, then the word The, then a dashed box, then the rest of the sentence: hoots in the tree at night, sprays water with its trunk, has a very long neck, pecks holes in the tree, rolls along the railway tracks, sails across the lake, has black and white stripes. A word bank across the top holds seven words — sailboat, giraffe, woodpecker, zebra, owl, train, elephant — one for each row.
Two supports run at once: the picture names the missing word and the sentence describes it. That is deliberate at six, because a child who cannot yet read woodpecker can still find it in the bank by first letter once the picture has told them what to look for, and a child who can read does not need the picture at all. The bank is closed and used exactly once through, so the last row can be reasoned out even if its sentence defeats them.
One sheet, seven sentences, seven words. This is the base page of the fill-in-the-blank family and the most supported: the letter-box face removes the bank, the choose-the-word face replaces it with a pair of options, and the story face spreads one bank across three linked sentences. Start here if cloze is new.
