Question Words Worksheet
Fill In the Question Word
Six question-and-answer pairs fill this 1st grade page. Each begins with a dashed box where the question word should be, followed by the rest of the question, and underneath it the answer sentence with the relevant part highlighted. A bank of five words runs across the top: How many, What, Who, Where and When. The sheet shown pairs four tigers with a how-many question, on the mountain with a where question, the ship with a what question, and at eight o'clock with a when question.
Working backwards from the answer is the move this face adds, and the highlight is the hinge: the child reads what is marked in the answer and then chooses the word that would have asked for it. Because the bank holds five words and the page holds six questions, one of them is used twice, which is worth pointing out — a closed bank usually means one use each, and here it does not.
One sheet, six questions, six words. How many is the long one and the one children most often forget is a question word at all, so it is printed as a single chip rather than two. Use this after the matching page, when the five words are recognised, and before the 2nd grade face that asks for the whole question rather than its first word.
