My First Small Letters — Large Lowercase Tracing

This kindergarten lowercase letter tracing worksheet is the gentlest place to start: only four small letters — a, b, c and d — drawn at extra size on three-line paper. Fewer letters and a bigger letter mean a shorter session and more room for a hand that is still learning to steer. The child traces each dashed letter from the orange dot, follows the arrows, and writes it once alone at the end of the row.

A first handwriting page should ask for one thing at a time. These four cover the two heights a child needs to notice straight away and nothing else: a and c live in the body between the dotted line and the baseline, while b and d are tall letters that reach the top line. That is the whole idea of three-line paper, taught with four letters instead of twenty-six. At this size the difference between a body letter and a tall letter is large enough to see across the table, which is exactly what a beginner needs before the letters shrink to workbook size.
