Lowercase Letter Tracing g to l on Three-Line Paper

This kindergarten lowercase letter tracing worksheet takes the alphabet from g to l — six small letters that use every part of three-line paper. The g and j drop their tails below the baseline. The h, k and l stand tall to the top line. The i and j each finish with a dot placed above. The child traces the dashed letters, starting at the orange dot and following the arrows, and writes the last one on each row without help.

These six letters are where the third zone of the writing line finally matters. Up to here a child can get by treating the baseline as the floor; g and j go through it. A descender that stops short looks like a different letter, and one that wanders too far collides with the row underneath, so the baseline becomes something to cross deliberately rather than to rest on. The dots on i and j are their own small lesson: a separate mark, made after the stroke, not part of it. The l is worth pausing on too, because it is nothing but a straight tall line and children often make it too short.
