Five Senses Worksheet
Five Senses: Which One Does Not Belong?
Five rows of four pictures make up this 1st grade page, and in every row three of the pictures belong to one sense while the fourth belongs to another. The child crosses out the one that does not fit. The sheet shown gives a flower among chocolate, cake and a lollipop; a feather among a cupcake, a cookie and honey; a sweet among a xylophone, a saxophone and a guitar; a string of lights among a whistle, a drum and a piano; and a tub of popcorn among a telescope, a star and a rainbow.
No labels are printed anywhere on this page, which is what raises it above the sorting sheet. The child has to notice the category before they can find the exception, and that is two steps rather than one. Two rows share taste and two share hearing, so the same majority sense comes up twice in different clothes, and the last row is the one to watch: a telescope is a thing you look through rather than a thing you look at, so some children will argue for it.
One sheet, five rows, five crossings. Ask for the reason as well as the mark, because the wrong answer is usually a good one badly timed, and a child who can say why the other three go together has understood the page. This is the last of the categorising faces in the senses family; after it, the write-the-word and sentence sheets move from choosing to producing.
