Five Senses: Which Sense?

Grade 1 Science — The Five Senses (readiness) PDF only Aligned standard — coming soon

Eight rows fill this 1st grade page. Each begins with a numbered picture on the left and ends with the same five organ chips on the right, always in the order eye, ear, nose, tongue, hand. The child circles the chip for the sense they would use. The sheet shown runs a pillow, a rock, a lemon, a tub of popcorn, a guitar, a string of lights, a torch and a rose, so touch and sight each come up twice, taste twice, and hearing and smell once each.

Holding the five chips in a fixed order across every row is the design decision that matters. It means the answer position is stable for a given sense, so a child who gets the pillow right can check the rock against it, and the page becomes about the item rather than about scanning a new set of pictures each time. Two of the eight are worth discussing before you mark: a lemon and popcorn are keyed to taste here, and both also have a strong smell.

One sheet, eight rows, eight circles. It is the quickest of the senses faces to complete and the easiest to check at a glance, since a correct column forms down the page. Use it as a check after the matching or sorting pages rather than as a first meeting, and expect to talk about the food items, which is usually the best part of the lesson.
