Fix the Sentence: Choose Between a Period and a Question Mark

Can you find the pear. Where is the papaya. Read like that, two of the five sentences on this 2nd grade capitals-punctuation page are plainly wrong, and putting them right means choosing a mark rather than adding one. Five cream lanes each hold a picture of one of the fruits and a white box with a lowercase sentence inside; the checklist across the top carries three items, Capital letter, Names and End mark. One sentence hides lily, another emma, and one contains a lonely lowercase i. A three-line handwriting rule under each box takes the corrected version.

A period is what a child adds when they are not listening. This page makes that impossible by mixing three questions in among the statements, so every sentence has to be read for what it does before the mark is written. The names raise a second question the child cannot answer by position: a capital at the start is a rule about place, but the capital on lily is a rule about the word itself, and the pronoun i is the one almost every second grader still misses. Five lanes is enough to see whether all three checks are running together or only one at a time.

Print the PDF free and ask the child to read each sentence aloud with the voice going up or staying flat; the ear decides the mark faster than any rule about question words. Mark the names in a second color on the first pass if they keep escaping. The capital and end mark version is the lighter one, with three sentences, no names and a two-item checklist.
