Letter of the Week Worksheet
M or N? Hear the Difference at the Start of the Word
Two easily confused letters share this Kindergarten m-or-n page. Eight picture cards in two rows of four fill the lower two thirds of the sheet — a nest, a necklace, a moon, a nose, a medal, a bottle of milk, a nurse and a mitten — and under every picture sit two small chips, one printed m and one printed n. The child says the word and circles the chip for the sound it begins with. The four m words and four n words are shuffled across the grid. Above the cards, a slim strip holds the Mm letter card and a single lane of dashed capital M to trace.
M and n are neighbors in the mouth as well as in the alphabet, and children who have learned each letter on its own sheet still mix them up when the two are offered together. This face makes the choice explicit and binary: every card is one or the other, nothing else, so the page measures the one discrimination and not letter knowledge in general. Saying the word with the hand on the lips — m closes them, n does not — is the classroom cue that turns the page into a lesson.
The chip layout takes a crayon or pencil circle and prints on one sheet. Use it after both letters have had their own week, not as an introduction to either. The English version pairs m with n; other minimal pairs in the family follow the same eight-card shape. The base letter-of-the-week sheet for M or N is the page to print first.
