Missing Number Equations to 20

Twelve equations within 20 fill this Grade 1 page, and the empty box moves around. On some cards it sits where you would expect, after the equals sign; on others it stands at the front or in the middle, so the child meets sentences shaped like a box plus 3 equals 8, or 14 minus a box equals 6, mixed in among ordinary ones. There is no working space and nothing to draw — the child reasons it out mentally and writes one number in the box.

This format quietly rewrites what the equals sign means. Most first graders read it as an instruction — now write the answer — and a page like this refuses to cooperate, because on many cards the answer is already printed. To fill the box the child has to see the sentence as a balance: something plus three is eight, so the something must be five. That shift is the beginning of algebraic thinking, and the classic error is beautifully diagnostic.
