Mental Math Within 10: Twelve Quick Facts

Twelve bare number sentences sit in a tidy grid on this Grade 1 page, and every one of them stays within 10 — some add, some subtract, all of them answered in the head. There is nothing to decode: no pictures, no story, no space for working. The child reads a fact, thinks, and writes the answer in the box at the end. Plus-one and minus-one facts are kept off the page on purpose, so all twelve are worth solving, and the whole sheet takes two or three minutes.

Within 10 is the band where fluency has to be built first, because everything above it borrows from here. A child who still counts on fingers for 7 minus 3 will count on fingers for 17 minus 3 as well, and later for 47 minus 3, spending on retrieval the attention that the real problem needs. Keeping the numbers small makes the actual goal visible: not correctness, which most first graders can reach eventually by counting, but speed and calm. That is why a short page done often beats a long page done once.
