Number Line to 100: Every Tick Is a Ten

Eleven ticks span the whole hundred on each of the three lines that make up this 1st grade number-lines page, one for every ten, and only 0, 50 and 100 are printed beneath them. Two orange arrows point down at unnamed ticks on every line, each with an empty dashed box above it, so there are six numbers to write. All six are multiples of ten, and the child reaches them by counting on in tens from the nearest of the three printed landmarks, or by counting back when the arrow sits past the middle.

This is the page where the decade sequence gets tested away from a hundred chart. Reciting ten, twenty, thirty is easy in a line; placing seventy on a real scale, and knowing it is two steps past fifty rather than three, is the part that needs practice. Because half the line lies beyond the 50 label, the child has to work in both directions, and counting back from 100 is usually the moment a teacher can see whether the decades are genuinely known or only chanted forwards. Six answers keeps it short enough for a starter.

Print the PDF free and have the child mark the middle of each line with a light pencil dot before answering, since 50 is the landmark that makes both halves manageable. The counting in fives version puts a tick every five over the same hundred and prints a label every ten, so there is more support and more to read.
