Where on the Number Line? 0 to 120, Past the Hundred

The line does not stop at the hundred. Each of the three lines on this 1st grade number-lines page runs to 120, with a tick for every ten and only 0, 50 and 100 printed, which leaves two ticks standing to the right of the last label with nothing written under them. Two orange arrows point down at unnamed ticks on each line, an empty dashed box above every one, six answers in total. Some arrows sit in the familiar part of the line and some sit out past 100, where the counting simply has to keep going.

One hundred and ten is the number that catches children out. Having spent a year treating 100 as the end of everything, they meet a tick beyond it and either stop or start again at zero. Seeing the scale carry on, with the ticks the same size and the tens still ten apart, is the argument this page makes, and it is what the first grade counting standard is really about: the sequence does not reset at a hundred. Two of the six arrows sit past the last label, enough to make the point without turning the page into a hundred-plus drill.
