Number Walls with Two-Digit Answers: Four Courses to 100

Four bricks are printed along the bottom of each wall on this 2nd grade number-walls page and six are empty above them. The four pyramids stand four courses high, ten bricks apiece, and their bases carry numbers like 7, 9, 6, 8 or 11, 6, 11, 8. Each brick is the sum of the two under it, so the second course is three bricks, the third is two, and a single stone crowns the wall. By the time the child reaches that top brick the total has run well past twenty, and on the taller walls past fifty.

The arithmetic changes character on the way up. The first course is a row of number bonds inside twenty, exactly the sums a second grader can do in their head, but the course above adds two teen numbers together, and the one above that adds two-digit numbers with a carry. That progression inside a single shape is what makes the page worth the paper: the child cannot skip to the answer, and an error in the bottom row travels upward and arrives at the top visibly wrong. Watch the third course, where 31 + 29 is the sort of sum that needs to be written down rather than held, and where children who have been working mentally usually reach for a margin.

Print the PDF free and leave room beside each wall, or hand out squared paper alongside it, because the upper courses want written working and cramped bricks encourage guessing. Check the second course rather than the top brick when marking; a wrong crown is almost always an error further down. Four row number walls keeps the same four-course shape with sums inside twenty, and number walls worked downwards runs the structure in reverse.
