Letter Boxes and the First Letter, with No Word Bank

Count the boxes and you know how long the word is; read the letter on the line and you know how it starts. Those two clues are all this 1st grade write-the-word page offers, because there is no bank across the top of it. Six toys are laid out two across and three down, among them a sandbox, a swing, a set of dice and a scooter, and each one has a handwriting rule with its opening letter printed in teal and a row of small dashed boxes underneath, one for every letter in the name.

Neither clue supplies a spelling, and that is what separates this page from the ones with a bank. The child still has to listen through the word and choose letters for the sounds, but the two supports catch the two errors that most often derail a first grader working alone: not knowing which word is wanted, and not knowing when to stop. A child who writes scoter finds an empty box and goes back to listen again, which is self-correction without an adult standing over the page. Where the boxes cannot help is the middle of a word, so the vowels are still the place to look when the sheet comes back.

Print the PDF free and ask for each toy to be stretched aloud, sound by sound, with a finger under the boxes; matching sounds to squares as they go is the habit the layout is built for.
