Write the Word Worksheet
Word Bank and Letter Boxes: One Box for Every Letter
A row of small dashed boxes sits under every line on this 1st grade write-the-word page, one box for each letter of the word that belongs there. Six vehicles fill the sheet, and across the top in a dashed orange strip runs the bank they are named in: bulldozer, canoe, crane, ferry, forklift, taxi. A taxi gets four boxes, a bulldozer gets nine. No first letter is printed anywhere, so the bank and the box count are the two things the child has to work with, and neither of them says which word goes where.
Put a word bank and a row of letter boxes on the same page and they check each other. Six words and six pictures means the bank can be worked through by elimination, but the boxes stop a child from writing the right word in the wrong place, because forklift will not fit into the four squares that belong to taxi. Matching a printed word to a picture is a reading task rather than a spelling one, and it is the honest description of what this page asks: the letters are all supplied, and the child copies them into a frame that confirms the choice. Crossing bank words off as they are used turns the last card into a piece of reasoning.
Print the PDF free and let the box count be used first, before the bank is read, on at least one card; counting nine boxes and looking for a nine-letter word is a strategy worth naming out loud. This is the middle of the family's support ladder. Letter boxes and the first letter takes the bank away, write the word: every clue adds the opening letter back on top of both, and write the word for 1st grade removes the bank while keeping the boxes.
