Write the Word with Every Clue: Bank, Boxes and First Letter

Every clue this family has to offer is on the page at once. A dashed orange strip across the top of this 1st grade write-the-word sheet holds the bank, giraffe, horse, koala, panda, swan and zebra, and each of the six animal cards below carries both of the other supports: the first letter already printed in teal at the start of the handwriting rule, and a row of dashed boxes underneath with one square for every letter. Full support is the right setting more often than it sounds. A child new to writing words from pictures, or one who has been away, or a class working in a second language, can complete six cards here without stalling, and finishing a page is not a small thing when the last three attempts ended in half a row and a rubbed-out line. The three clues do different jobs: the bank supplies the spelling, the first letter identifies which bank word belongs to which picture, and the boxes confirm the choice. Nothing is left to guess, which makes this a page about handwriting, letter order and confidence rather than about encoding.
