Unscramble the Sentence: The End Mark Shows, the Capital Does Not

One tile in every row of this 1st grade sentence-building page carries a full stop or a question mark, and none of them carries a sentence-opening capital. Four fruits sit at the left of their own cream rows, an avocado, a banana, a lime and an apple, and beside each one a line of white word tiles waits out of order: feeds, the, avocado., Leo. A handwriting rule runs underneath for the finished sentence. The end mark tells the child which word finishes; nothing on the row tells them which word begins.

Knowing where a sentence stops is half of knowing where it starts, and this page gives away exactly that half. With the last tile identified, the child has a fixed point to build backwards from and a smaller puzzle in front of them, which is why this sits between the version that shows both clues and the version that shows neither. Reading the tiles aloud in trial orders is the method, and the murmur of it is the sound of a sentence being tested by ear. One warning worth passing on: a person's name keeps its capital wherever it stands in the sentence, so a capitalised tile marks a name and not necessarily the beginning.

Print the PDF free and let the tiles be numbered lightly in pencil before anything is written on the rule, or cut them out for a first pass across the desk. The capital and the full stop both have to be supplied in the written version, so the reading-back check matters.
