Opposite or the Same? Circle the Opposite, Not the Synonym

Grade 1 Language PDF only Common Core

Six word rows fill this 1st grade opposites page, and each is a small trap. The row's word — rough, big, strong, fast, loud, happy — is printed in large type beside an arrow, and three words in outlined chips sit under it. One chip means the opposite (smooth), one means the same (bumpy), and one is an unrelated word from another pair (night). The child circles the opposite and leaves the synonym alone. All six rows follow that pattern: big with small, large and wet; strong with weak, tough and day; fast with slow, quick and soft; loud with quiet, noisy and new; happy with sad, glad and cold.

Putting a synonym next to the antonym is what makes this page teach something the card pages cannot. A child who has learned that the answer is the word that goes with rough will circle bumpy, because bumpy also goes with rough; only a child who is thinking about the direction of meaning — the other end of the scale — chooses smooth. That is the distinction 1st grade vocabulary work is trying to build, and the stray third word keeps the choice from collapsing into a coin toss between two related words. The teacher asks a child who circled the synonym to say both chip words in a sentence about the same object; the error usually corrects itself out loud.

No writing is required, so the page works as a quick check at the end of an opposites unit or as a warm-up before the pair-up page. Keep the base write-the-opposite page and the opposites-in-a-sentence page for the children who still need to produce the word; this one is for children who can already produce it and need to sharpen the meaning. The 2nd grade antonyms-with-a-prefix page moves on to opposites built with un-, dis- and in-.
