Pair Up the Opposites: Find Both Words Yourself

Grade 1 Language PDF only Common Core

Nothing on this 1st grade opposites page tells the child which word goes with which. Twelve loose words sit in a bank across the top — dark, low, sweet, bright, slow, dry, high, hard, wet, sour, soft, fast — and below them are six numbered rows, each with two handwriting rules and a double-headed arrow between them. The child reads through the bank, spots two words that are opposites, and writes the pair on a row, one word on each side of the arrow: dark on the left, bright on the right. Six rows, six pairs, and every word in the bank used exactly once.

This is the hardest of the word-only opposites pages, because no card gives the child a starting word. Both halves of every pair must be found by scanning and comparing, which is the real test of whether the pairs are known rather than recognized. The bank deliberately includes near-neighbors: hard could tempt a child toward soft or toward easy, but easy is not there; wet and dry, high and low, fast and slow have to be sorted out of one shuffled set. The teacher watches a child who writes the first six words down the left side and then hunts for partners — that is a fine strategy, and the arrow reminds the child that either order is correct.

The page needs nothing but a pencil; the writing rules are full-size so both words fit. If it proves too open, step back to the opposites-in-a-sentence page, where a not-sentence supplies the first word of each pair, or to the base page, where each card prints one word and the bank holds the other. The opposite-or-the-same page is the natural follow-up: it keeps the child choosing between words but adds a synonym to reject.
