Recycling Sort Worksheet
Recycling Sort: What Is It Made Of?
Eight objects run down this 1st grade page, one to a row, each beside a wide band of three-line handwriting rules. A word bank across the top holds five materials: plastic, paper, cardboard, glass and metal. The child names what each object is made of and writes the word on the lane. The sheet shown runs a bolt, a purple spoon, a notebook, a sauce bottle, a nut, a sheet of paper, a parcel and a cereal box — two metals, two papers, two cardboards, one plastic and one glass.
Naming the material rather than the bin is the step this page adds, and cardboard is why it matters: a parcel and a cereal box go into the same bin as paper but are not paper, so the bin and the material come apart here for the first time in the family. Eight rows against a bank of five means three words are used twice, which is worth saying out loud, because a closed bank normally implies one use each.
One sheet, eight objects, eight words. The lanes are ruled rather than blank, so the writing stays the right size while the thinking is elsewhere. Print it after the two sorting faces, when the bins are familiar, and use the spoon to open the conversation: it is plastic, not metal, and the colour is the only clue on the page.
