Recycling Sort: Three Things I Recycle

Three numbered lanes fill this 1st grade page. Each carries a tall dashed drawing frame on the left and two sets of three-line handwriting rules on the right. Nothing else is printed: no pictures, no word bank and no starter. The child draws something they recycle at home in the frame and writes what it is on the lines beside it, three times over. The frames are portrait-shaped and large, so a bottle or a cereal box can be drawn at a reasonable size rather than squeezed in.

This is the open face of the recycling family and the only one where the content comes from the child's own kitchen. That matters more here than in most subjects, because what a household actually recycles varies, and a page that supplies its own objects can quietly teach a scheme the family does not use. Drawing before writing also lets a child commit to a real thing first and find the word for it second.

One sheet, three drawings, three names. It makes a good homework page precisely because the answers are at home, and the three finished lanes read back well in a circle the next morning. Use it at the end of a recycling unit, after the sorting and material pages have supplied the vocabulary the writing lines will need.
