Rhyming Words Worksheet
Rhyme Strings: Two Rhymes for Each Picture, and Words That Fit Nowhere
Twelve words sit in a dashed bank at the top of this 1st grade rhyming-words page — dog, cat, pie, tree, goat, bat, plum, jar, bed, car, bee, log — and below them four large picture cards, each with two empty handwriting rules beside it: a key, a frog, a hat, a star. The child says the picture, reads through the bank for the two words that rhyme with it, and writes them on its lines: tree and bee for the key, dog and log for the frog, cat and bat for the hat, jar and car for the star. Four bank words — pie, goat, plum, bed — rhyme with nothing on the page and are left where they are.
This is the one rhyming page where the child reads the bank and rejects words. Eight of the twelve have a home and four are foils from other rhyme families, so finishing the page means deciding, for every word, whether it belongs anywhere — a small act of judgment the picture-bank pages do not ask for. Two rhymes per picture also builds the idea of a rhyme string: not a pair but a set, dog, frog, log, that could go on. The teacher looks at the leftovers: if bed or plum has been written under a picture, the child is matching by vowel or by first letter rather than by the end of the word.
It prints on one sheet with two full rules per card. Use it after the sort-the-rhymes page, which has the same shape but a picture bank and no foils. The write-your-own-rhymes page removes the bank entirely; the finish-the-rhyme page puts the missing rhyme at the end of a line of verse instead.
