Rhyming Words: Rhyme and Write

Grade 1 Reading: Foundational Skills PDF only Common Core

Six rows, each a small rhyming puzzle, make up this 1st grade rhyming-words worksheet. At the left of every row is one boxed picture — a boat, a bee, a hat, a bun, a dog, a jar — followed by a sound mark and three pictures in dotted circles. Only one of the three rhymes: the boat's row offers a house, a flag and a coat; the hat's row a rose, a bat and a vest; the dog's row a frog, a snail and a skirt. The child says the first picture out loud, says the three choices, circles the one that rhymes, and writes that word on the handwriting rule at the right of the row. The child hears the rhyme and writes the rhyming word; nothing is joined by a line.

Rhyme is the first sound skill most children master, and this page moves it from the ear to the pencil. The two wrong choices in each row are drawn from other rhyme families, so a child who says the words will hear the mismatch at once, and the right answer is always a word whose rhyme is spelled the same way — bat for hat, coat for boat, car for jar — which means the child can spell the answer by copying the ending sound. The teacher listens for the saying: a child who circles silently is matching pictures, and the page has no way to reward that. Write the anchor word above the row if the child needs the spelling in view.

It prints on one sheet with a full three-line rule per row. The rhyme-or-not page is the Kindergarten judgment step before this, and the sort-the-rhymes and rhyme-strings pages send the child to a bank of words instead of three pictures.
