Sight Words Set 5: Big, Went, Are, She

Set 5 of the sight-word series puts big, went, are and she on the handwriting lines. The page keeps the familiar three-beat rhythm — read the word, trace it over the dashed model, write it once more on the empty line — and by this point in the series many children run the routine themselves, word by word, without being told what comes next. That independence is part of the design, and worth praising out loud.

This set quietly introduces grammar through the back door. Went is many children's first irregular past tense — nobody 'goed' anywhere in a storybook — and meeting it as a sight word saves a lot of puzzling later. Are and she are the engine parts of a thousand simple sentences, and big is the rare sight word a child can actually illustrate, which makes it a good confidence anchor for the set. Together the four words let a young reader build honest sentences at last: she went, we are big.
