Word Scramble Worksheet
Word Scramble with Shapes: Unscramble the Word
Mix it up, then put it right. Each picture of Shapes arrives with its letters scrambled, and the child's job is to unscramble them into the correct spelling. Because the word is shown only as a picture, the child has to listen to the sounds and decide which jumbled letter comes next. That careful ordering is the foundation of Grade 1 writing: a child learns that letters sit in a fixed order to make a word. Short, familiar Shapes mean a child can say the word, hear each sound, and slot the matching letter into place, one at a time.
Matching each sound in a word to its letter and then getting those letters in order is the spelling foundation Grade 1 is built on. A scramble sheet rehearses it cleanly: the child knows the word from the picture and has to arrange its spelling. Keeping the Shapes short and familiar means a child can stretch the word out and hear every sound in turn, building real independence with short, regular words.
Children who like unscrambling Shapes settle into the sounding-out, and putting each word back together gives a small, real win. When this feels easy, try the word scramble with another set of pictures, or unscramble the words in a fresh theme. You can also browse every word scramble worksheet or the whole Shapes collection for grade 1 — each sheet prints cleanly or plays online for free, with no timers and no scores, just a child working at their own pace. And every word a child rebuilds makes the next one a little quicker to put in order.
