One and Many: Write the Plural Without a Model

The dashed letters are gone from this Kindergarten singular-plural page. Four rows of toys run down the sheet, each with a single toy on the left, a truck, a balloon, a boat or a skateboard, its word printed in solid teal underneath and a badge showing 1. On the right of the dividing line the same toy appears two or three times with its own badge, and under those pictures there is nothing but an empty handwriting rule. The child reads the word for one, looks at how many there are now, and writes the plural out with no letters to follow.

This is where the ending stops being something to copy and starts being something to decide. The rule is in front of the child in the plainest possible form, one object with its name and several objects without one, and the only missing piece is the s. Because every plural on the page is regular, a child who has understood the idea can finish all four rows unaided; a child who has been tracing without thinking copies the singular straight across and leaves the s off. That one letter is the whole diagnosis, and it can be read from the doorway.

Print the PDF free and say the pair aloud first, one boat, three boats, so the ear supplies the ending before the hand does. Four rows is enough to show a pattern and short enough to finish in one sitting. Keep singular and plural for kindergarten nearby for any child who still needs the plural in dashed letters, and move to write the word for one when this direction is comfortable and the other one needs the same treatment.
