Write the Word for One: The Plural Is the Only Model

The only printed words on this Kindergarten singular-plural page are plurals. Four rows of animals fill the sheet: on the right of each, two or three turtles, whales, vultures or iguanas with the plural spelled out in solid teal below them, and on the left a single animal with a badge reading 1 and an empty handwriting rule underneath. Nothing is dashed. The child looks at the word for many, takes the ending off in their head, and writes the word for one. The pills at the top, 1 one and 2 3 many, are the only other text on the page.

Of the four ways this rule can be practised, this is the hardest, and deliberately so: the direction is reversed and the scaffold is gone at the same time. Removing a letter turns out to be less intuitive than adding one, partly because the plural is what children hear most often and partly because there is no positive action to perform. The reward is that a child who can do it holds the relationship rather than the habit. Look at the last letter of each answer. Turtles copied whole, or turtle written cleanly, is the entire result of the page, and four rows give four chances to see it.

Print the PDF free and let the child say the plural, then the singular, then write; the spoken pair carries most of the work. This is a closing page rather than an introduction, best used once tracing in both directions has been done. Many and one keeps a dashed singular for children who are not there yet, and one and many: write it yourself is its mirror image, with the singular given and the plural to produce.
