Pearl's Opinion Page — Back It Up (Grade 2)

Grade 2·RI.2.8

Pearl the seal writes the opinion page, and every column makes a POINT — "Our town should build a new park." Your job: tap the card that BACKS IT UP with a real reason, not a card that just says the same thing again or talks about something else. A warm Grade 2 reading game about how reasons support an author's point, aligned to Common Core RI.2.8.

About this activity

Pearl the seal runs the opinion page, and each column makes one clear point — "Our town should build a new park," "Everyone should wear a helmet when biking" — so children read the point and tap the card that backs it up with a real reason, like "Children have nowhere safe to play." It's a free, interactive Grade 2 reading activity that runs right in the browser with no account.

The big idea is that a reason is not the same as repeating the point. In every round the three cards are one true reason, one restatement that just says the point again in different words ("Our town really needs a brand-new park"), and one off-topic card about something else entirely ("The library closes at five o'clock"). The child cannot win by matching words — they have to decide which card actually explains WHY the point is a good idea. That is the difference between supporting a claim and merely echoing it.

It is aligned to Common Core RI.2.8 — describing how reasons support the points an author makes in a text. No timer, no score — just calm, playful practice.

What's inside this activity

  • Designed for Grade 2 learners (ages about 7–8)
  • Common Core strand: Reading: Informational Text
  • Aligned to Common Core standard RI.2.8

How to play

Read Pearl's point at the top, like "Our class should grow a garden."

Read the three cards and tap the one that gives a real reason for the point.

Not quite? Try again as many times as you like — there is no timer and no score.

What your child practices

  • Tell a supporting reason apart from a card that just restates the point
  • Spot off-topic cards that talk about something unrelated
  • Decide WHY a point is a good idea, not just whether it sounds true
  • Build the claim-and-reason thinking that opinion reading and writing depend on

Learning goals

Identify the reason that supports an author's point — the focus of Common Core RI.2.8

Understand that restating a point is not the same as giving a reason for it

Build a foundation for reading and writing opinion pieces with real support
