1st Grade Patterns

By first grade, patterns get more interesting than a plain AB repeat, and these pattern worksheets for 1st grade meet a child right at that stretch. Each row shows a picture pattern that has begun -- an AB, an ABB, or a growing pattern that gets a little longer each step -- and the child works out the rule and continues the row. First graders also practise naming the rule out loud and spotting what makes a pattern a pattern, which turns copying into real reasoning.

Continuing a pattern asks a child to predict what comes next, a thinking skill that reaches straight into number sense and later algebra. Because the patterns use familiar pictures, the challenge lives in the rule, not in reading the images. Mixing AB, ABB, and growing patterns on different sheets keeps a child from settling into one automatic answer, so they really have to look and think each time.
