Alphabet Maze

Alphabet Maze A to Z: Fly the Rocket to the Moon

Kindergarten Reading: Foundational Skills Common Core

A night sky full of planets, the Earth and a comet frames this alphabet maze. A rocket starts at the green circle, and the moon waits at the top. The paths are dotted with round white stones, and every stone carries a capital letter. The right road passes the whole alphabet in order, from A to Z. The other stones carry letters too, often the ones children mix up: a letter that skips one ahead, the letter just before, or a look-alike such as E and F or M and N.

At every fork the child says the alphabet so far and picks the stone with the next capital letter. That turns reciting the alphabet into using it: knowing what comes after a letter without singing from the start. Because the wrong stones are near misses, a guess rarely works; the child has to know the order. Kindergarten teachers will recognise this as recognising and naming all the capital letters in order, one of the first reading foundations, practised here inside a game.

The page prints as a PDF, works as a screen version where the child drags the rocket from stone to stone and presses Check, and comes with an answer key showing the A to Z road in colour. In the same family, the small-letter maze under the sea does the same with lowercase letters and b, d, p and q traps, and the honeycomb hop starts from a letter in the middle of the alphabet. These are picture mazes with a story; square-grid mazes, dot-to-dot and word sorting have their own pages.
