Beginning Sounds Worksheet
Beginning Sounds with Supermarket Things — Letter A
Listen for the first sound in apple. On this sheet the child is handed the letter A and finds every one of the supermarket things whose name begins with its sound — apple all open with A. Saying each word, catching its opening sound, then tying that sound to the letter A is the Kindergarten letter-sound link this practises, set among a cart, a basket and a till.
Beginning-sound matching is phonics, not visual searching: the child is not looking for the shape of A on the page, they are listening for which supermarket things START with its sound and connecting that sound to the letter. With apple to find, the practice stays concrete, and every picture named strengthens the link between the sound the child hears and the letter A it goes with.
Listening for A across a scene of supermarket things turns phonics into a game, and finishing one letter invites the next. Try the B-sound pictures in supermarket things, or the C-sound pictures in supermarket things. Browse all the beginning-sounds worksheets or the entire supermarket things set, free to print or play online for kindergarten, and watch how quickly a child starts catching the first sound in a word on their own. Say apple one more time, stretch out its very first sound, and feel exactly where the letter A begins it.
