Beginning Sounds with Beach Things — Letter U

The letter U sets this beginning-sound hunt. Among the beach things, the child marks every name that opens with the sound U makes — umbrella. They test each picture by saying it: umbrella starts with U, so it counts. Listening for an opening sound and linking it to its letter — never spotting a printed U — is the early-reading skill this Kindergarten sheet rehearses.

Beginning-sound matching is phonics, not visual searching: the child is not looking for the shape of U on the page, they are listening for which beach things START with its sound and connecting that sound to the letter.
