Beginning Sounds with Beach Things — Letter U

KindergartenReading: Foundational SkillsCommon Core

The letter U sets this beginning-sound hunt. Among the beach things, the child marks every name that opens with the sound U makes — umbrella. They test each picture by saying it: umbrella starts with U, so it counts. Listening for an opening sound and linking it to its letter — never spotting a printed U — is the early-reading skill this Kindergarten sheet rehearses.

Beginning-sound matching is phonics, not visual searching: the child is not looking for the shape of U on the page, they are listening for which beach things START with its sound and connecting that sound to the letter. With umbrella to find, the practice stays concrete, and every picture named strengthens the link between the sound the child hears and the letter U it goes with.

A child who hears that umbrella opens with the U sound is doing real reading groundwork, one picture at a time. Keep going with the B-sound pictures in beach things, or the C-sound pictures in beach things. The full beach things collection and every beginning-sounds worksheet are free to print or play online for kindergarten, and every first sound a child catches builds toward sounding out whole words later. One last pass: name each beach things picture in turn, catch its opening sound, and keep only the ones that start the way U does.
